You also realize that the true benefit of doing this project is increased value in your home. So, why did the city just give you a call and ask you to stop what you are doing? Why are they able to tell you that you can’t do something? If you are not sure about what your city requires in home improvement projects, you are not alone. Each year people get started with projects and have to stop because they did not get the necessary permit.
What permit do you need? Most cities will require some sort of acknowledgement to virtually any home improvement project that you do. If you are doing anything that requires building, tearing down or demolishing or even something that has to do with the land you are building on, you may find yourself facing a few problems. Yet, you can avoid these problems by just seeking out the necessary help from your city.
First things first, give your city hall a call. Find out if the home improvement project that you are taking on is one that does require a permit. If so, then it is likely that you need to stop by, pay a small fee and get a paper that says it is okay to do. Depending on your actually home improvement project, you may also need to show some plans for it, provide details about it and invest in having plans drawn up for it. In this regard, the city wants to make sure that the structure of your home or land is safe and will provide security to you. Nevertheless, it may be a must before starting your home improvement project.
